On to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Today I woke up, packed up, and had breakfast at 8:00 to depart for the airport at 9:00. The little hotel — the same one I stayed in when I arrived — was convenient. It’s close to the airport and just outside of Jo’burg, calm and quiet. The people who work there are very nice. Tilly, the chef, never disappoints. I had dinner there last night and breakfast this morning — eggs cooked to perfection every time.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’m having a good time. And arriving at an airport for travel seems to be a trigger for me. I wish Kristi was with me.

I flew Airlink (a South African airline) from O.R. Tambo to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe — a 1 hour 45 minute flight. I lucked out and got a “poor man’s first class seat” — bulkhead and no seat partner. Airlink served a little sandwich, and it was very tasty.

When I booked this part of my trip, it was a late booking for this time of year, meaning there weren’t a lot of options available for the dates I needed. Actually, the only option for me was the Victoria Falls Hotel. It was a lot of money, but I didn’t want to miss Victoria Falls after coming all the way to southern Africa. Let me just say that this is the fanciest place I’ve ever stayed in my life. It’s going to be a very nice few days.

BTW — it’s the same hotel where Princess Elizabeth, soon to be Queen, stayed with her family in 1947.

After being picked up at the airport, taken to the hotel, and getting checked in, I walked around the grounds a little bit and then I was off on my first excursion: a sundowner cruise on the Zambezi River.

I sat with a couple from Italy, who were just married four days ago. They were fun to talk to.

The Zambezi River is absolutely gorgeous, and the cruise ended just after sunset. Of course, the captain situated the boat perfectly for pictures as the sun dipped behind the African horizon.

After the cruise, I had dinner and then went to bed. Looking forward to tomorrow.

By the way, this is the forecast for the next few days while I’m here. Everyone keeps asking me if it’s too cold — I’m not wearing a jacket. 🤣
