Animals and Food Galore

Coffee stop during the morning drive. 

This morning we were up and ready to head out by 6 AM for our morning game drive with our guide, Hardy. I won’t go into too much detail, but the most thrilling moment was watching two lions and three cubs working on a zebra kill. I posted a video of that separately on Facebook earlier today. The very first thing we spotted as we pulled away from the lodge was a pack of African wild dogs squaring off against two spotted hyenas over a fresh kill, and we got to watch the standoff for a good 15 or 20 minutes. I also posted a video of that encounter. 



After the drive, we returned to the lodge and indulged in a delicious buffet breakfast. It’s hard to overstate just how exceptional the food is here. Lunch and dinner are gourmet experiences, and each night we’ve been served a different kind of African wild game as the main course. The starters and desserts have been every bit as outstanding.


After breakfast, we simply lounged about, sitting on the deck and watching the animals wander in and out of the watering hole. Although we hadn’t spotted a giraffe on any of the drives yet, one strolled right up to the watering hole just before our evening outing.


On our evening drive, we caught a fleeting glimpse of a buffalo, but they can be quite shy, and he bolted into the bush before we got a really close look. I wasn’t able to get a photograph. Among the smaller animals we saw today were dwarf mongooses, who were busy playing in the gardens of the lodge.

After the evening drive, we again returned to another fantastic dinner.

Tomorrow is our final game drive here at this lodge, and then we’ll be off to another reserve and a different lodge.

Hooray for the 21st Century

It makes me laugh a little inside whenever I hear someone complaining about a long flight, a missed connection, or a crying baby. Can you imagine the difficulties of traveling hundreds of years ago? I’ll take any modern inconveniences that come my way. Flying through the air in a metal tube and arriving on a different continent while being served a fairly good meal is opulence, even in economy.  This trip I get to fly on the largest passenger plane in service, the A380. 468 fellow passengers and I loaded up for the 10-hour flight to London from LAX. It was a comfortable flight, even in economy.  After three hours at Heathrow I boarded the next flight to Johannesburg. Another A380 but this time I was on the upper level. I paid a little more for exit row seats on these flights. Exit row = Poor man’s first class — the extra leg room is so great to have on long flights.  I arrived in Johannesburg at about 7:00am on June 5 — nine hours ahead of Pacific time. An Homage to Kristi

After a late breakfast and a short trip into town this morning, followed by a small lunch, Gerrit and I decided to take a hike into the hills above the lodge. I haven’t had too many grief episodes during the trip; the worst of it was actually when I boarded the first plane to leave Fresno. But this trip has been good, and today was definitely an homage to Kristi. I thought about her a lot along the hike, and I knew she was with us. In fact, I brought her backpack again on this hike. The round-trip hike took us about two and a half hours, and I estimate we covered three to four miles—much of it uphill on the first leg and downhill on the last. The elevation gain was about 400 feet. We actually had two destinations. The first stop was a small waterfall, which at this time of year was an even smaller waterfall and not that exciting.
